The first thing we noticed is that the average age among the 3500 employees is about 25 to 26 years old and the CEO is about 35 years old.
These young staff members work around 12 to 16 hours a day or at least stay in their office for that many hours, which is understandable as most of them do not have their family in the city. The company provides lunch and dinner and the office is much more comfortable than the shared room they call home.
Considering this, our design concept started with the idea of creating a free and fluid space, rich in events and very democratic in terms of the views and sunshine being evenly distributed.
The existing building plan had an irregular shape with an amorphous central core that makes any traditional arrangement more difficult.
Richard Serra
Richard Serra’s sculptures inspired us to organize the offices on each level with curved partitions that tilted irregularly along its length, giving the space a sense of movement, dynamism and fun. As people will be spending most of their day time inside the office space it is necessary to provide a comfortable and interesting place where they can discover a new angle or perspective to look at or walk through every day.
Another key decision on the design concept was to organize the working, service and communication areas in a different way from the typical office arrangement. We placed the working area and meeting rooms close to the central core of the building, freeing up the windows to be accessible to everybody. In this way, there is no need to hang up curtains or blinds to control the sunlight that normally is reflected on the computer screen.
With this organization, all the time the staff spends out of their working station, whether resting, going to a meeting or the service room or just getting a glass of water, they will enjoy the views, sunlight and a joyful space to walk through.
Using colors, installations or even theme-based decoration, inner spaces are contrasted with the white outer or common areas. Changing the color scheme by floor creates an amazing night view from outside the building which means a new façade design without touching it.
Considering the 35,000 square meters, the limited budget of two other spaces and the heavy usage, it is necessary to find materials that are inexpensive, hard and resistant.
The curved partitions were covered with vinyl strips normally produced for skirting or baseboard.
